Canadian-born, Argentine-raised, New-York-based trumpeter, composer, educator and all around swell guy Michael Sarian.
Born on a warm Tuesday morning in Canada, only to be whisked away to Argentina at the tender age of 1, Michael Sarian is a trumpeter and composer whose work has been heard throughout the United States, South America and Europe. Introduced to music early on, Michael began playing the piano at the age of six, was handed his first trumpet at 13, and was touring the United Kingdom by age 18. As a young adult in Buenos Aires, he studied with many of the best musicians in Argentina, including Juan “Pollo” Raffo, Richard Nant and Juan Cruz de Urquiza. Never one to turn down a gig, Michael has performed and toured professionally with several groups: from progressive rock bands in empty basements, 12 piece disco bands playing by the beach in Uruguay, rock bands in packed sports arenas, to big bands at the Teatro Colón, and everything in between.
Michael earned his bachelor’s degree in classical/contemporary composition and theory from Muhlenberg College, where he studied with Charles Fambrough, Gary Rismiller and Douglas Ovens. After returning to Buenos Aires for four years, he relocated to New York City in 2012 to pursue a master’s degree in Jazz Studies at New York University, where he studied with great musicians such as Laurie Frink, Alan Ferber, Brad Shepik, Ralph Alessi and Mike Rodriguez. Since moving to the US, he has performed at the legendary Blue Note Jazz Club, Jazz at Lincoln Center, NPR's World Cafe, The Beacon Theater, The Bowery Ballroom, Central Park SummerStage, and many more.
Michael has released two albums as a bandleader with his septet, Michael Sarian & The Chabones (Argentine slang for the dudes...or the schmucks, depending on whom you ask), and has appeared on many more as a sideman. In 2015 he began composing and arranging music for Michael Sarian & The Big Chabones, a 16 piece big band alternative, going on to perform at a number of venues in and around NYC. Since the Fall of 2015, Michael has been making yearly pilgrimages back home to Buenos Aires to perform his music with local musicians, including some of his old mentors.
Besides performing regularly with his own projects and as a sideman throughout the city of New York and all its colorful boroughs, Michael teaches trumpet, theory & composition, works at a non-profit, cooks noodles, enjoys bourbon & wine, goes to the gym, and tries to make the most of his fifteen minute walk to the nearest subway station.
